Draft HEAT: The Action is the Juice
Every NBA Draft Prospect wants the score of being the top pick. Only one will walk away with it.
Don’t let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the HEAT around the corner.
— Neil McCauley —
Suspense is one of the most dangerous feelings in the world. A dash of uncertainty finds itself surging through your body. Your mind begins to play games with you, inviting anxiety to come through the front door. Nerves begin to spike. A general discomfort lingers. You quickly find yourself face-to-face with something that can make you feel frozen in time.
That same emotion has two sides of the fence. When controlled, suspense can also get the adrenaline rolling. Excitement flows throughout the air. You find yourself uncertain about the results of the current situation at hand. The dice are dancing on the table. The big reveal is lurking.
In those seconds right before the result, it’s the greatest rush in the world.
Every NBA Draft cycle presents an idea of suspense to basketball fans around the world. We find ourselves excited about what the future will bring. A new wave of basketball talent is about to enter our lives, with the hope of installing a jolt of optimism for better days ahead. For fanbases that find their team near the bottom of the standings, the lottery is a bottle of suspense just waiting to be consumed. With each envelope revealed, we find our dopamine levels spiking as our favorite team gets closer to chasing an improved immediate future. Once our team lands that top selection, a new type of “chase” presents itself.
When this year’s basketball calendar opened, an idea was presented to NBA fans. This upcoming draft class wasn’t just any draft class. The “Big 3” was a consistent theme thrown around to spike curiosity. Three extremely talented basketball talents that had a case to be number one picks in any other draft. The problem with preseason “hype” is that it can be a dangerous concept—especially when it’s an empty bottle that must slowly fill up throughout the year.
It’s safe to say that the same bottle is overflowing now. As we approach the “chase” of the current NBA Draft cycle, not only has the “Big 3” delivered on the hype. But another name has cemented itself into the discussion.
Suddenly, we have a lot of HEAT surrounding some of the best prospects in this class.
In the upcoming months, we are going to find out who can earn the “score” of being the number one overall pick.
To do that correctly, we first must investigate like a detective.
“Well, ya know, for me, the action is the juice.”

THE JUICE
Growing up, movies were something I fell in love with. The idea of being able to escape reality for a bit and watch an incredible production come to life was just the best. Not only did I obsess over sensational acting performances on the big screens, but I geeked out on the details: intense scores, and characters that you found yourself strangely relating to.
And yes, I’m not afraid to admit it: even rooting for the bad guys in certain films.
Every once in a while, a movie comes around that seems to just simply feel like it’s not just a normal film. You find yourself captivated by it. The suspense of each upcoming scene has you inching towards the edge of your seat. Sometimes, those cinematic experiences aren’t consumed until later in ourlives, as they somehow “slip through the cracks.”
Let me tell you about the movie “HEAT”.
In 1995, HEAT was released and immediately became known for being the best movie ever made. Okay, let’s be serious here for a second. HEAT is a 1990s action film starring legendary actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The movie focuses on a group of criminals who are trying to put together one last big heist before retiring. But it’s also a classic film in which the cast is so insane, you find yourself in every scene going: “Oh my gosh, they are in this movie too?!”
Neil McCauley (played by Robert De Niro) is a master criminal who is the leader of a crew featuring the likes of Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore), and Trejo (Danny Trejo). Also helping McCauley is Nate (Jon Voight). Side bar…what a f**king crew. The entire movie focuses on a number of incredibly intense action scenes, as McCauley battles with trying to get his crew in line, while they feel the heat from the LAPD and Robbery Homicide Detective Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (played by Al Pacino).
Now, in case you haven’t seen HEAT, I’m not going to spoil it. All I will share is that the movie delivers. One of the scenes is one of the coolest action scenes in any film. The performances and characters are all awesome. The music in the film will echo in your head any time you think of walking into a bank. After watching HEAT for the first time, I was honestly mad at myself that it took so long for me to watch it.
“My life’s a disaster zone. Because I spend all my time chasing guys like you around the block.”

THE CHASE
Now you’re probably sitting there asking: “Rucker, why did I just spend that whole last section reading about a movie? Isn’t this supposed to be a draft article?”
I’ve been trying to put into words just how exhilarating this 2026 NBA Draft class is setting up to be. Using “special” or “lives up to the hype” just felt like it didn’t accurately express what was about to unfold in front of basketball fans. The closest thing I can compare it to is the first time I watched HEAT.
This cycle has been a full-throttle, adrenaline-filled motion picture with incredible performances. It’s become something that has us all constantly on the edge of our seats. Fans have heard numerous times that a draft class is advertised as strong. But rarely do we find out that the score near the top is even bigger than we dreamed of it being.
While the “crew” of the movie HEAT is legendary, the 2026 NBA Draft class has its own squad that is up there with the best of them. Cameron Boozer (Duke), AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Darryn Peterson (Kansas), and yes, Caleb Wilson (North Carolina) have cemented themselves as the prized possessions of this draft cycle. Each player has NBA teams plotting their next move. Tanking has been a topic that has appeared on a record-number of podcasts during the All-Star break. Organizations are willing to literally give their money away to improve their chances at finding lottery luck.
But the real juice is going to be the chase for these prospects to hear their name called first.

THE SCORE
Each one of these prospects has teams plotting their own version of a heist when it comes to the NBA Draft lottery. Not only do these players seem to have tremendous potential at the next level, but they also all seem to offer a realistic possibility of being legit building blocks for their future franchises. Let’s focus here on why each of these prospects deserve to be in the running near the top of this potentially historic class.
Kansas guard Darryn Peterson has been advertised as one of the best guard prospects in recent years. When at full strength, Peterson is a marvel on the hardwood. He glides around the court like a figure skater on ice. The game looks effortless at times for the 6’5” freshman. Peterson took tremendous strides throughout his high school career, cementing himself as one of the top prospects in his class. He’s a multi-level bucket-getting machine that checks all the boxes teams would be looking for when it comes to a potential superstar talent. During his senior season, Peterson’s full arsenal of weaponry was consistently on display. He was a player who would be force-fed on offensive possessions because of his scoring versatility and vision as a playmaker.
Defensively, Peterson showcased flashes of gifts that cannot be taught. He was an incredible combination of timing and anticipation, which presented the idea of a two-way demon being unlocked down the road.
BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa is what it would look like if you could create a forward prospect in a lab. Listed at 6’9”, Dybantsa dances with a tantalizing combination of immediate talent and terrifying upside. Since his junior year in high school, Dybantsa has been a jumbo-sized forward who beats opponents with his elite combination of quickness, strength, and athleticism. He’s an artist painting his next masterpiece when it comes to building real estate at the free-throw line, a tool that takes many young forwards years to figure out at the NBA level. Defensively, the tools are there for Dybantsa to be beyond special. The competitive drive is there, and the glimpses of on-ball disruption have you foaming at the mouth.
Every “crew” needs a reliable force that provides consistency. Someone you can count on to bring it and produce no matter the situation. That’s right where Duke freshman Cameron Boozer steps in. Throughout his basketball journey, Boozer has put together a resume with the best of them. He’s a productive machine who continues to surpass expectations put on him at every level. Winning is everything, and no player has illustrated that as much as Boozer, who presents the idea of a high-upside, high-floor caliber prospect. It helps that the 6’9”, 250-pound big man is a monster around the basket, playing with the strength of an NBA veteran who has lived in the weight room for seven-plus years.
Tying the crew together is North Carolina freshman forward Caleb Wilson. Coming into the year, Wilson was viewed as the upside swing; he was talented and oozing with tremendous potential, but many wondered how long it would take to develop. Throughout his senior year of high school, Wilson left evaluators pondering just how high his ceiling could get. 6’10” forwards don’t normally move with such grace. Not only did Wilson’s physical tools and rebounding ability jump out, but he also showcased a treasure chest of tools that looked to be waiting to be unlocked.
THE HEAT
In one of the most iconic scenes of the movie, Neil McCauley and Vincent Hanna find themselves sitting together at a coffee shop. It’s a moment that has you on the edge of your seat, as it’s the first time both men come face-to-face to acknowledge they know about each other. After sharing some knowledge about why each of them “do what they do,” Hanna asks McCauley if he’d be able to walk away from a potential “job” if things got too risky.
That’s when McCauley shares some previous wisdom passed down to him, and one of the most iconic lines of the film. “Don’t let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the HEAT around the corner.”
There’s no such thing as a perfect prospect. Every incoming crop of basketball talent will feature the likes of potential superstars and diamonds in the rough. But every one of those players will have questions. There will still be something about them that has evaluators scouring through film to figure out how impactful those doubts can become. In so many words, every player has HEAT. But is it enough for NBA teams to avoid becoming attached?
Darryn Peterson has been considered one of the favorites to be the top pick in this class. When Peterson is on, there’s a dangerous talent that looks like the next installment of a star guard at the NBA level. But no prospect has dealt with more HEAT recently than Peterson. The Kansas freshman has been battling a hamstring injury since the beginning of the season. Fans have consistently been playing the waiting game, but Peterson has found himself consistently generating attention for the wrong reasons. After being sidelined with the injury, Peterson has tried to return to action for the Jayhawks. Unfortunately, that has resulted in Peterson sitting out stretches of games due to “cramps.” He’s had fans anxious with each upcoming game, as there’s been no guarantee that Peterson would play or finish each game.
An argument could be made that basketball fans haven’t even been able to see Peterson at 100% this year. When that realization hits home, and Peterson is still able to take over games with his ability, it presents an even bigger headache about what could lie ahead once he is finally healthy. Context is everything, especially when evaluating some of the top prizes in the class. Peterson’s context has presented more challenges than normal as an incredibly gifted talent who has all the makings of a superstar but hasn’t been able to consistently show his versatility due to injury. The tools are undeniable, but until Peterson answers the doubts with playing time or a clean medical at the combine, the suspense will build.
The NBA is a league that is always craving jumbo-sized superstar forwards, and AJ Dybantsa appeared to be next in line. At the beginning of the year, Dybantsa steamrolled weaker competition on his way to putting up eye-opening box scores. But questions started to arise about Dybantsa’s game. The processing and feel seemed to be a bit delayed. When Dybantsa faced tougher competition, the rawness with his game seemed to rise to another level. Recently, Dybantsa has poured water on the fire surrounding that idea. He’s been fantastic recently, answering questions about his playmaking and processing on the court. Instead, it appears as if Dybantsa has started to put HEAT on the competition for the top pick. Still, there remain questions about the processing on the defensive side of the ball, especially when it comes to the off-ball defense.
Elite production, consistency, and an impressive resume can create some real juice when it comes to the stock of a prospect. That’s just the case with Cameron Boozer. On paper, Boozer looks to have everything you’d want in a potential top pick. The intangibles are outstanding. The basketball IQ and feel are tremendous. Still, questions remain about the overall upside moving forward. Boozer has won at every level of his basketball journey, something you’ll hear about time and time again. But is that something we hang our hats on too easily? Production-wise, there’s no one better. Boozer knows how to put his hard hat on every night and punch the clock. The HEAT surrounding his game focuses on the defense and athleticism. Throughout his entire basketball career, Boozer has been underestimated as a player who looks to be reaching his “ceiling.” Time and time again, Boozer broke through that ceiling with a sledgehammer. NBA teams might be drawn to the upside of the competition, but scouts continue to reiterate they “might not sleep at night” if they passed on a player like this.
If anyone has put serious HEAT on the competition, it’s been Caleb Wilson. Coming into the year, Wilson looked like a prospect that would probably need a couple of months before things “started to click.” But Wilson had other plans in mind. He hit the ground running, dunking everything in sight and rebounding like a madman. Wilson’s motor, competitiveness, and talent quickly became undeniable. After outplaying all his counterparts, including an exhibition game against Dybantsa, Wilson cemented himself as a name that will be firmly in discussion with the “Big 3.” Still, there are plenty of questions that remain with a talent like this. Wilson has been a joy for evaluators due to his competitive nature and mentality on the court. But the offensive game still has some work to be done. The outside shot was a question coming into the year, and while the flashes are promising, consistency is necessary for getting a team to be all-in on Wilson over his counterparts. In high school, Wilson showcased teases of being a maniac on the defensive side of the ball. So far this year, those flashes haven’t come frequently enough…yet.
There’s no denying we are witnessing something special with the 2026 NBA Draft class. NBA teams know it, as they try to do everything in their power to improve their chances at lottery fortune. The “Big 4” of this class present some of the biggest potential to immediately change the trajectory of their next NBA franchise. Whichever team ends up landing the top pick, or any pick in the Top 4, you can imagine the joy that will spread throughout the front offices.
If you think any team would be willing to trade out, and miss the opportunity to land one of these talents…
I think this phone call interaction in HEAT from Neil McCauley would perfectly sum up two GMs discussing that idea…
McCauley: “What am I doing? I’m talking to an empty telephone.”
Van Zant: “I don’t understand.”
McCauley: “Because there is a dead man on the other end of this f***ing line.”
