In-Person Scouting Notes: Maryland vs. Northwestern
Maxwell scouted the Maryland vs. Northwestern game in-person! Read his game recap, as well as takeaways on 2025 NBA Draft prospects Derik Queen, Brooks Barnhizer, Nick Martinelli, and Julian Reese.
I had the pleasure of scouting Northwestern at home again against Maryland on Thursday night. This game definitely altered my evaluation of a few key draft prospects, so let’s get right into it with a game recap and closing thoughts on the likes of Derik Queen, Brooks Barnhizer, Nick Martinelli, and Julian Reese!
First Half
20:00 - 15:02: Northwestern 8, Maryland 7.
Maryland comes out in an aggressive defensive scheme, pressuring the ball early and often. This hurts Derik Queen, who commits an early foul getting too handsy on the perimeter after a switch. Otherwise, though, he’s looked good. He’s been sliding his feet well and actively communicating. He also grabbed a defensive board, went into a grab-and-go, Nash dribbled out after he didn’t like his look, and slung the ball to Rodney Rice on the perimeter (who, unfortunately, had a foot out of bounds). Ja’Kobi Gillespie hits a slick stepback three. He’s so shifty and is consistently generating space. For Northwestern, Nick Martinelli’s uncanny touch is on display, as he hits two floater-range shots. Brooks Barnhizer gets on the board with a classic old-man funk counter sequence on the interior.
