Viewer's Guide: 2022 NBA Summer League
Viva Las Vegas! NBA Summer League is here and it's time to break down everything you need to know for the upcoming madness of hoops.

Viva Las Vegas! Welcome, folks, to the most wonderful time of the year. The 2022 NBA Draft class brought us some glorious excitement, and now it’s time to take a look at the incoming slate of talent. Surely you’re here to talk about the awesome slate of rookies that are going to be taking the league by storm and installing hope into every fan base.
BUT NOT SO FAST, MY FRIENDS.
Don’t forget about those glorious sophomore breakout candidates who have been grinding in the gym all summer to send a message to the rest of the NBA. Summer League is the most sensational time for basketball fans. If you haven’t attended it in Las Vegas, please make sure to put it at the top of your list next year. Las Vegas Summer League is the closest the NBA will ever get to having its own version of Woodstock.
It’s days filled with nothing but basketball games. You find yourself hammering home as much live hoops as your brain could possibly manage…then you follow that up with another three days of hoops.
One of my favorite activities to prepare for Summer League is to prepare a “TV Guide” for basketball fans. I like to call this the “Viewer’s Guide.” It’s a breakdown to give you a little reminder of some of the players that could make some noise throughout the upcoming weeks of basketball.
Now, let’s throw out some important disclaimers before we get into it.
You’re going to see some “veterans” listed on these rosters that might surprise you. Just because they are listed here doesn’t necessarily guarantee that they are going to play. While the Detroit Pistons listed Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, and Isaiah Stewart on their roster, they also could just have them there for practices and such.
Another important reminder. If a sophomore has a strong performance out of the gate, don’t be surprised if they get the early “shut him down” from the front office. Hey, it happens, folks. There also could be some movement with the rosters throughout Summer League, especially with players eager to make a club.

Atlanta Hawks
Notables:

Summary: This should be a fun roster with some intriguing talent to keep an eye on for the Atlanta Hawks. AJ Griffin will get plenty of attention from the fans throughout Summer League. After once being viewed as a potential Top 5 selection before the 2021-22 NCAA season, Griffin saw himself end up falling into Atlanta’s lap at 16th overall. It could be a blessing in disguise for Griffin, who has the potential to put on a show from outside in Las Vegas and should be a great fit moving forward alongside Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.
Sharife Cooper should be plenty motivated to prove his worth and make a case for a spot in the rotation. Cooper was outstanding last year in Summer League and went on to have some flashes throughout the year in the G-League. Last year’s first-round pick Jalen Johnson has the potential to be a player that impresses quickly. Johnson only played eight games in the G-League last year but went on to post averages of 22.5 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. He’s going to be a fascinating one to watch closely.
There’s a pair of other names to keep an eye on. The first is 2022 second round selection Tyrese Martin. The former UConn product plays the game with some swagger and has the tools to become an intriguing sleeper candidate. Don’t forget about Joel Ayayi as well. Although the former Gonzaga product went undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, there’s still plenty of intrigue. Ayayi went on to post averages of 10.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.6 assists in the G-League for the Capital City Go-Go last year.
Boston Celtics

Summary: The name to watch for the Boston Celtics should be sharpshooting wing Sam Hauser. The team reportedly is high on Hauser becoming a potential asset next year, which shows after rewarding him with a three-year extension this offseason. Hauser has the ability to go “NBA Jam” mode from outside, which should be great for Summer League fans. After spending another year developing overseas, Juhann Begarin should have a big opportunity to impress. The defensive-minded wing has plenty of athleticism and upside to be an intriguing option for the Celtics. Still just 19 years old, Begarin went on to post averages of 11.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game this year while shooting 43.2% from the field and 30.9% from three-point range.
Trevion Williams is another name for ALL to watch. After surprisingly going undrafted this year, Williams is going to be “auditioning” for NBA teams while playing for the Celtics. The former Purdue big man has the offensive weaponry and playmaking ability to be an intriguing rotation asset in the league. JD Davison will have plenty of buzz heading into Las Vegas. A former projected lottery pick, Davison has freakish athleticism and some serious upside. He’s going to get plenty of chances to showcase his potential in Vegas.
Don’t forget about Jordan Bone and Mfiondu Kabengele. Bone showcased some potential at Tennessee before getting drafted 57th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. He spent the last year playing in the Spanish Liga ACB. Kabengele was a former first round selection who averaged 17.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in the G-League last year with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Brooklyn Nets

Summary: All eyes will be on Cam Thomas, who was named “Co-MVP” of Summer League last year. Thomas has the ability to turn into a dangerous scoring option at the NBA level, and he will be on plenty of radars as a potential sophomore breakout candidate. With the Brooklyn Nets looking like they will have plenty of minutes potentially opening up, Thomas will be eager to make a statement. Former 2021 29th overall selection Day’Ron Sharpe will be another name to monitor. Sharpe showed some flashes throughout his rookie year, as he went on to average 6.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game. Still just 20 years old, Sharpe will be another player poised for a strong second season leap.
David Duke Jr. will be another underrated name to keep an eye on. After going undrafted last year, Duke went on to put up some respectable numbers in the G-League. While playing with the Long Island Nets, the 6’4” guard posted averages of 16.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Don’t forget about 2021 second round selection RaiQuan Gray as well. The former Florida State product has an intriguing skill set, and he could be a wildcard to watch in Las Vegas. Gray went on to post averages of 6.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 22.0 minutes for the Long Island Nets last year.
Alondes Williams will have plenty of Draft sickos more than excited at Summer League. Williams had an outstanding year for Wake Forest after transferring from Oklahoma and has the size and vision to be an intriguing rotation asset moving forward. He could be a name that creates some buzz early in Vegas.
Charlotte Hornets

Summary: The Charlotte Hornets should have one of the more intriguing squads heading into Las Vegas. The headliner will be rookie big man Mark Williams. The 15th overall selection has the potential to slide in and be the interior presence the Hornets have been hunting for over the years. Williams should have the potential to put up some big numbers in Las Vegas. Charlotte did a great job of snagging up some intriguing value in the draft with the selection of Bryce McGowens at 40th overall. One of the most talented prospects in the 2022 NBA Draft, McGowens has the upside to be a serious asset for the Hornets moving forward.
After showing some impressive signs of development throughout the second half of the G-League season, all eyes will be on athletic big man Kai Jones. The former 19th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Jones started to find his groove near the end of the year with the Greensboro Swarm. In 24 games, Jones went on to post averages of 18.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 62.0% from the field. James Bouknight was going to be the name to watch, but he reportedly underwent surgery on his pinky last week.
JT Thor will be another name to watch. The athletic forward has the raw upside to take a big leap for the Hornets this year. Keep an eye on former Florida guard Scottie Lewis as well. One of the more athletic players in the 2021 NBA Draft, Lewis went on to average 12.1 points per game last year for the Greensboro Swarm.
Chicago Bulls

Summary: The Chicago Bulls are going to have plenty of firepower in their backcourt this year, especially with the addition of former Arizona Wildcat guard Dalen Terry. The 18th overall selection has the swagger and competitiveness to generate some buzz at Summer League, and he will be motivated to put on a show. One of the surprising names to go undrafted this year was Marquette forward Justin Lewis. The recently turned 20-year-old took serious strides forward this year, especially when it came to his outside shot. At 6’7” with a 7’2” wingspan, Lewis has the raw tools to become a player who can stick on this roster.
Carlik Jones will be an underrated name to keep an eye on. Jones has the ability to light up the scoring column in a hurry, and he should be motivated to put on a show in Las Vegas. The 6’0” guard averaged 21.1 points and 8.2 assists per game in the G-League last year with the Texas Legends.
Marko Simonovic was a second round selection for the Bulls in 2020 and showed some flashes in the G-League last year. While playing with the Windy City Bulls, Simonovic went on to post averages of 17.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Makur Maker is a name that should get plenty of “remember me” attention. Maker attended Howard before suffering a season-ending injury after just two games.
Cleveland Cavaliers

Summary: Cleveland made some noise last year in the NBA and followed that up with another impressive Draft haul. Former Kansas Jayhawks wing Ochai Agbaji will be the attention grabber. Agbaji was one of the most impressive players in college basketball this year, and he has the potential to put up some big numbers in Las Vegas with his outside shooting ability. Don’t sleep on second round selection Isaiah Mobley. The brother of Evan Mobley (he’s good), Isaiah has the ability to carve out a role as a rotation asset with his feel for the game and court awareness.
Aaron Henry was a surprise undrafted player in the 2021 NBA Draft. The former Michigan State product has the tools defensively and could become a “sleeper” to watch throughout Summer League. Henry spent the last year playing in the G-League with the Delaware Blue Coats and averaged 12.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 44.3% from the field and 35.7% from three-point range. International prospect Luke Travers made plenty of noise with his play in the NBL for the Perth Wildcats. The 57th overall selection in the 2022 NBA Draft averaged 7.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game last season in 22.0 minutes of action.
Dallas Mavericks

Summary: All eyes in the building will be on former G-League Ignite guard Jaden Hardy. One of the top preseason prospects in the 2022 NBA Draft, Hardy ended up falling to 37th overall before Dallas traded to acquire the talented guard. One of the most dangerous shooters in the class, Hardy will be on a mission to send a statement early on. Keep an eye on 2021 NBA Draft prospect Moses Wright. The former Georgia Tech product has the tools to be a serious rotation asset in the NBA. In his final 12 games with the Texas Legends, Wright posted averages of 22.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 53.1% from the field and 38.9% from three-point range.
Derrick Alston Jr. will be another underrated name to monitor throughout Summer League. The former Boise State product has great size at 6’9” and can fill up the scoring column in a hurry. In 15 games in the G-League last year, Alston posted averages of 19.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Jalen Lecque spent the last year in the G-League with the Wisconsin Herd and has the ability to be an attention grabber in Las Vegas. In 28 games last year, Lecque posted16.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game.
Denver Nuggets

Summary: The Denver Nuggets should have a gritty roster full of plenty of intriguing pieces. The most notable will be first round selection Christian Braun. The former Kansas Jayhawks wing has the ability to be an early contributor for this Nuggets team. Braun is a player who makes winning plays all over the court, and he could become a perfect fit for Denver, even as a rookie. Former UCLA freshman Peyton Watson will be a popular one to keep an eye on in Las Vegas. Once viewed as a potential Top 10 selection, Watson struggled to generate consistent minutes for the Bruins last year. The talent is there, and Watson has the tools to be a sensational developmental piece for the Nuggets organization.
Don’t forget about international big man Ismael Kamagate. The 46th selection in the 2022 NBA Draft, Kamagate will draw plenty of buzz at Summer League for his high motor and desire to throw down monster slams. Kamagate posted averages of 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game for Paris Basketball this year.
Former Villanova guard Collin Gillespie will be an underrated name to monitor in Summer League. A crafty guard with the ability to impact the game in a number of ways, Gillespie could be a player who finds a way to stick in the league. Jontay Porter will be the name to monitor closely. An intriguing talent with the tools to be an asset in the NBA, Porter could become a steal if he can stay healthy.
Detroit Pistons

Summary: WAGON ALERT! Deeeeetroiiiit Basketball! Yes, folks, the Detroit Pistons have the potential to have an absolute WAGON of a Summer League squad. Now let’s get this out of the way at first…I would be SHOCKED if Cade, or even some of the other vets, end up playing a single minute at Summer League. Chances are those players are going to be on the roster to get some reps at practice, etc.—so let’s shine some light on the rest of the squad.
Jaden Ivey will have the attention of pretty much everyone that steps foot inside the gym. The fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft has the ability to be a showstopper in Las Vegas with his transition ability and athleticism. Keep an eye on fellow 2022 Draft picks Jalen Duren and Gabriele Procida. Because of league rules, Duren and Procida might not be officially “allowed” to play until trades go through. So don’t freak out just yet…
2021 second round selection Isaiah Livers is the name to watch closely. After rehabbing an injury from before last year’s Draft, Livers will be ready to show he’s going to be part of the rotation this year. Killian Hayes could get some extended run in Summer League as the combo guard is hoping to take another leap forward in his development. An underrated name to keep an eye on is former UCLA wing Jules Bernard, who showed some flashes during the NBA Draft combine.
Golden State Warriors

Summary: Golden State has a roster that has the potential to be a walking HORROR film at Summer League. All eyes will be on athletic big man James Wiseman. After rehabbing an injury last year, Wiseman suffered a setback before being shut down by the team. Wiseman will be motivated to show everyone that he’s ready to roll, and he should be one of the top players to watch in Las Vegas. His teammate, Jonathan Kuminga, will be another name to watch closely. Kuminga showed some brilliant flashes throughout his rookie year, and Golden State will be eager to let him run wild in his sophomore campaign.
Moses Moody will be another player to watch closely. After some solid flashes throughout the California Classic, Moody will have the opportunity to show that he’s deserving of more minutes in the Warriors rotation this year. Ryan Rollins was going to be a popular sleeper to monitor, but it’s been announced that a stress fracture in his right foot will keep him out of Summer League.
Don’t forget about Milwaukee freshman Patrick Baldwin Jr. either. One of the most polarizing prospects in the 2022 NBA Draft, Baldwin has the potential to be a steal with Golden State and will have plenty of attention in Las Vegas.
Houston Rockets

Summary: Houston, prepare for liftoff. After doing an outstanding job building through the draft the last two years, the Rockets should have plenty of exciting talent on their roster. The belle of the ball will be third overall pick Jabari Smith Jr. The former Auburn freshman was one of the most impressive players in college basketball last year and should be an exciting name to watch. Smith also has the potential to be the classic “does anyone want to tell him it’s just Summer League?” guy due to his relentless motor on both sides of the floor.
TyTy Washington ended up falling right into the laps of the Rockets with the 29th overall pick. It could be a blessing in disguise for both parties, as Washington could be a great get for the Rockets moving forward. LSU forward Tari Eason should be another name who could blossom at Summer League. Eason was sensational in limited minutes for the Tigers last year, and he has the tools to develop into a big-time asset for the Rockets.
Don’t forget about 2021 NBA Draft first round pick Josh Christopher. A bucket-getting machine, Christopher could be someone who takes a nice step forward for Houston in his second season. Usman Garuba will be a name to keep a close eye on. The energetic forward showed some flashes in the G-League last year, averaging 9.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in 25.3 minutes.
The name to watch out for is second-year guard Daishen Nix. The former G-League Ignite product was starting to show some serious signs in the G-League last year and could be in for a breakout year. In 18 games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Nix posted averages of 20.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 47.9% from the field and 39.5% from three-point range.
Indiana Pacers

Summary: WAGON ALERT! The Indiana Pacers are going to have a heck of a roster in Las Vegas. The headliner will be lottery selection Bennedict Mathurin. The sixth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft was a popular name in draft circles heading up to the draft. Mathurin has the ability to be a lethal scoring option at the next level, especially when it comes to playing alongside Tyrese Haliburton. Chris Duarte will be a leading candidate for the prestigious “too good for Summer League team.” Duarte showed some flashes throughout his rookie year and should be primed for another step forward next season.
Andrew Nembhard has the tools to be a serious get for the Pacers in the rotation. After showing some strong signs in the NBA Draft combine, Nembhard found his stock soaring, as he went on to be an early second round selection.
Isaiah Jackson is going to be one to watch closely, folks. The former 22nd selection in the 2021 NBA Draft is oozing with upside and showed some serious flashes last year. If Jackson can showcase the game is developing, he has the ability to earn some extended minutes as a sophomore.
Tevin Brown can be a bucket getter and is an underrated name to keep an eye on. Former Baylor freshman Kendall Brown has the athleticism and upside to be a potential steal for the Pacers. He will be a developmental piece for the Pacers that has great upside. Duane Washington Jr. has the versatility to turn into a nice rotation asset for the Pacers. In 11 games with Fort Wayne last year, Washington posted averages of 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
Los Angeles Clippers

Summary: The Clippers will find themselves with plenty of intriguing assets to keep a close eye on in Las Vegas. One of the top names will be second year player Brandon Boston Jr. The former 51st pick in the 2021 NBA Draft showed some serious flashes with the Clippers last year and will be a popular breakout candidate around the league. Moussa Diabate has the potential to be a serious asset for the Clippers moving forward. The former Michigan freshman plays the game with a relentless motor and is oozing with potential.
Jason Preston was a popular sleeper for the 2021 NBA Draft before missing the year due to an injury. The former 33rd overall pick has a strong feel for the game and will be a popular player to keep an eye on in Las Vegas. Former Georgia Tech guard Michael Devoe continued to put up some impressive numbers throughout the year and will be a sleeper to monitor for the Clippers.
Los Angeles Lakers

Summary: Max Christie has the potential to be an absolute steal for the Los Angeles Lakers. After generating some buzz as a potential preseason lottery pick, Christie struggled with inconsistent play throughout his freshman season. Despite his lack of consistency as a shooter, Christie’s defensive ability and impact kept him on the floor for major minutes. The talented wing has the potential to be a lethal asset at the next level once the shot comes around, especially when it comes to his defensive upside.
Scotty Pippen Jr. went undrafted, but he has the potential to be a serious bucket-getter moving forward. The former Vanderbilt guard averaged more than 20 points per game during his final two seasons in college and will be a name to watch closely throughout Summer League. Mason Jones has been a popular sleeper around the NBA over the years. He has the potential to be a bucket getter and will be a name to monitor in Las Vegas. There are tools for Fabian White Jr. to be a potential rotation asset at the next level. White has an intriguing set of skills to get his game and could be a player that makes some noise in the G-League this year.

Summary: CHAOS ALERT! The Memphis Grizzlies roster is absolutely stacked, so let’s try to run through it. Jake LaRavia was a popular riser throughout the 2022 NBA Draft, and the Grizzlies traded up to secure the talented forward. LaRavia plays the game like a seasoned veteran and should be an intriguing rotation piece for Memphis. Keep an eye on former Tennessee guard Kennedy Chandler as well. Although undersized, Chandler has the quickness and feel for the game to be an outstanding change-of-pace guard at the next level.
Ziaire Williams showed some great flashes for the Grizzlies as a rookie. He will be a popular breakout candidate as a sophomore, and his development will be fascinating to monitor throughout Summer League. David Roddy was a “surprise” selection in the first round. Roddy is undersized at 6’5” but has outstanding footwork; he could become a unique weapon for the Grizzlies.
Kenneth Lofton Jr. was a popular name throughout the NBA Draft process. Although he went undrafted, Lofton secured a two-way contract with the Grizzlies. He has an outstanding feel for the game with some underrated playmaking ability and will be one to watch out for in Vegas. Don’t forget about Santi Aldama. The 30th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft has an intriguing set of tools in his game and could be a player that starts to buzz in Summer League. Vince Williams Jr. has the versatility to become a steal for the Grizzlies. The 47th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft posted averages of 14.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game for VCU last year.
Miami Heat

Summary: The name to keep an eye on will be 2022 first round selection Nikola Jovic. After a slow start in the California Classic, Jovic ended on a high note by finishing the final game with 25 points. Jovic has the all-around upside to be a fascinating piece for the Heat organization. Former Fresno State big man Orlando Robinson continued to generate some buzz as a potential sleeper this year. Robinson could find himself developing his game in the G-League, but he has the tools and offensive upside to monitor throughout Summer League.
Jamaree Bouyea was an intriguing sleeper heading into the 2022 NBA Draft. The upperclassmen guard has the potential to be a player who can stick in the NBA, and the Miami Heat are known for finding some “gems” in the undrafted market. Omer Yurtseven showed some serious signs throughout Summer League last year. He’s expected to play in Las Vegas and will be a popular name to monitor.

Memphis freshman Josh Minott is going to be a popular developmental piece to keep an eye on. Minott has the raw tools to turn into a valuable asset moving forward but will need time to let his game come together. He should be a potential highlight machine in Las Vegas.

The Draft Day slide for EJ Liddell continues to be a fascinating story. One of the most impressive players in college basketball last year, Liddell has the two-way upside to be a rotation asset for the Pelicans moving forward. Trey Murphy III showed flashes throughout his rookie year and will be a potential breakout candidate for the Pelicans. The lengthy wing has the defensive upside and three-point shooting to take a big step forward for New Orleans this year. Jose Alvarado will immediately be a fan favorite and looks to have found a potential home in New Orleans.

Mann has the tools to become a serious offensive asset for the Thunder if his game takes another step forward. Aleksej Pokusevski has shown some flashes throughout the year, and he will be another name to watch closely, especially if his game can take another step forward.
Santa Clara guard Jalen Williams was one of the hottest names throughout the 2022 pre-draft process. It resulted in the Thunder investing in him with the 12th overall pick. Williams has the potential to be a versatile asset for the Thunder, with an outstanding feel for the game and the ability to score at multiple levels. The OTHER Jaylin Williams was an intriguing selection for the Thunder. While many expected the former Arkansas forward to return for another year, Williams kept his name in the 2022 NBA Draft and went on to be selected 34th overall. Justin James will be an underrated name to monitor for the Magic. At 6’7” with the ability to score, James showed some intriguing flashes in the G-League last year. In 21 games with the Canton Charge, James posted averages of 19.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Daniel Oturu was the former 33rd overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft. The former Minnesota big man spent the last year playing with the Windy City Bulls in the G-League and posted averages of 13.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in 22.2 minutes.

Plenty of eyes will be on 2021 12th overall selection Josh Primo. Still just 19 years old, Primo has the tools to turn into a serious asset for the Spurs this year and should be prepared to see a big uptick in minutes in his second season. Notre Dame freshman Blake Wesley will be another name to keep an eye on. Wesley has the tools to be a dynamic scoring weapon at the next level and could put up some big performances in Las Vegas.
Don’t forget about second-year wing Joe Wieskamp. The former Iowa Hawkeyes sharpshooter spent some time in the G-League with the Austin Spurs last year, posting averages of 17.1 points per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. Ohio State freshman Malaki Branham has the potential to be an absolute steal for the Spurs. One of the most impressive freshmen in the country, Branham has the tools to become a lethal weapon on the offensive side of the ball with his feel for the game and tough shot-making ability.
Dominick Barlow was generating some buzz around the league before going undrafted in this year’s draft. Koloko showed serious strides in his development this year for the Wildcats, especially when it came to his ability as a defensive asset.
Dalano Banton will be a fascinating name to monitor in Las Vegas. The 6’7” forward has the tools to turn into a valuable asset for the Raptors moving forward. In just seven games in the G-League last year, Banton posted 24.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game while shooting 51.1% from the field and 39.3% from three-point range. He could be a name that makes some noise.
Former 2021 second round selection David Johnson will be another name to watch out for in Vegas. The former Louisville guard has the tools to become a serious player for the Raptors moving forward.
